He has turned Ajax down. Former Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter has turned down the chance to become the next Ajax head coach ❌The Dutch club made the 48-year-old their prime target and held talks with him ⬇️ pic.twitter.com/DPmbbVQgEf— Sky Sports News (@SkySportsNews) April 8, 2024 Still not if he is interested in replacing Southgate. The press have suggested st times him, Howe and Copper all would rather continue in the club game.
Clearly he's being very selective with his next job. I wouldn't be drawn on anything about not wanting the job previously, its a different case when you are in a job to the current situation for him, and I suspect Howe, if he becomes available in the summer. Still think Carsley will be high in the thinking too, and its interesting he turned down the Ireland job to stay with the under 21s. This England group should be around an absolute peak in 2026, then 2028 is a home Euro's, so it should be a very desirable job when it comes up. Not really too concerned about a lack of options, though I do hope we sort out Southgate's future very quickly after our Euro's ends. No point dragging our heels on that one.
Ajax's squad is very poor right now. Without assurances on spending it's easy to see why he may have turned the job down.

Frank Lampard rules himself out of Canada running https://t.co/zt8kD0dVtk— Matt Law (@Matt_Law_DT) April 15, 2024
Frank Lampard ain't getting the England job mate, no matter how much you try and shoehorn him into the conversation.
I know but Matt Law keeps mentioning how he was watching England training as if to hint that Frank wants a job with the FA.
I will never understand how you on the one hand continuously fear the impact of social media pressure on England and FA choices, yet at the same time continuously bring up probably the most unpopular choice on social media for next England manager.
I wonder if the fact Tuchel is clearly good at knockouts is going to be seen by the FA as a reason to consider him.
🚨 - JUST IN: Talks between Ajax & Graham Potter are in very serious stages now. In fact, Graham Potter will be in Amsterdam today or tomorrow. There is still no advanced talks between Graham Potter and Ajax despite initial meetings taking place earlier this month.— Nizaar Kinsella (@NizaarKinsella) April 24, 2024
There are question marks over how he'd use players like Palmer, Foden, Bellingham etc and if he'd give them the platform to play to their maximum; I also think there'd be a good chance he'd favour some pretty left-field names to suit his demands but overall he should do a decent job at the very least. He's a legitimately top coach and should probably leave Everton after this season imo, it's really tough to do well consistently there atm and with everything going on behind the scenes he should realise there's probably a cap on what he can do in the near to mid-term.
Would he get that many PL offers? A lot of clubs either won’t really suit him or consider him. Neither could I really see him getting tons of offers from abroad.
Dyche is far too defensive, he's basically the modern version of Allardyce. I've had enough of seeing drab defensive football under Southgate, I want to see a progressive coach come in.
We don't play drab and defensive football under Southgate. We have in some games sure but we're generally in the top 3 goalscoring nations in qualifying and we had the highest goals per game ratio at the last World Cup. Southgate is a pragmatist and plays a range of styles depending on opponent. Under Hodgson we did play drab and defensive football.
No thanks. When you think about how he historically ignores young players, makes everything about him and single handedly tried to destroy Luke Shaw, I'd give that bloated ego a particularly wide berth.
Mourinho would be chasing yesterdays man. There's a reason there's so few top managers of his personality and style nowadays. I wouldn't rule him out being a good international manager somewhere but he'd not be a good fit for this England team I suspect, or for the media glare of the England job.
It’s all relative, yes we played horrible football under Hodgson (not that I was saying I want him back anyway) but Southgate has much better players than Hodgson had. He probably has 6 or 7 players in his first 11 that are genuinely world class, Hodgson didn’t have anything like that even at the end when better players were coming through. Maybe a bit harsh to say drab and defensive, Southgate has done a generally decent job as England boss compared to the horror shows of his predecessors, but as even you alluded to in the big games he’s very defensive and reactive rather than proactive. Examples - Croatia WC semi final 2018, Italy Euro final 2021. Even in friendlies against top teams he plays safe rather than being bolder in his tactics. There has to be a level of pragmatism and defensive structure but our attacking players are our strength and I think a more progressive manager who has a plan A, B and C would get more out of them. Whether England can get that man I don’t know but I want them to try.
Some of the media would love him to get it. Plenty of scope for articles speculating about which player he will fall out with next and reports of tensions with the FA.
