As the QF field gets wrapped up tonight, I just wanted to check notes on 2nd-leg hosting privileges... Pachuca-Herediano: "El Team" threw away their chance by falling asleep on that late Robinhood equalizer yesterday, so Pachuca will finish the series at home. América-Revs/Alajuelense: While América are grateful that their Clásico didn't get more complicated at the end, getting through with only 3 points after the home loss to Chivas means that the QF 2nd leg hosting honors are the Revs' to lose. We'll see how intent "Liga" are to save face... at least the FO gave a clear message on this tournament's performance, canning Carevic after their drubbing last week. Columbus-Tigres: Both went through on 4 points, but Tigres will host the 2nd leg thanks to its superior GD. Miami-Monterrey/Cincy: Monterrey have the inside track on the honors, but need to win tonight to guarantee it.
football is not about population, is about performance. Tell that to Croatia which reached final phases of World Cup last 2 seasons. Or to Uruguay which have Penarol and Nacional, some south american giants vs Brazil and Argentina
Heading into the second legs this week, worth keeping in mind: - On the left side of the bracket, Pachuca's on 7 points to América's 6, so the tuzos have the inside track on hosting the return leg of the semifinals. - As for the regios, Tigres have yet to win on the road this Champions Cup, and they're tied with Columbus on 5 points... meaning that Monterrey, who are on a perfect record so far, are already guaranteed to host the second leg of the SF if they make it. For their part, Miami only have 4 points, so they'd have to win and hope Tigres/Crew ends in a draw to finish their semifinal at home.
While we await the schedule for the semifinals - knowing that Pachuca and Monterrey will host the return legs of their respective series - there is a potential concern with the Final (h/t to @Nico Limmat for the find). The anonymous club source shared: 1. Concacaf has yet to inform the remaining clubs whether the Champions Cup Final will be held at a neutral venue or hosted by the finalist with the better record; 2. If the latter, then outside of the highly unlikely scenario where the Crew would host the Final, it would have to be slightly rescheduled: June 2 is Election Day in Mexico, so security concerns would obligate them to play the Final on June 1.
So, Concacaf dropped quite a significant update in the middle of its semifinal schedule announcement: Meaning that the neutral venue option is shelved for this year (Concacaf, probably: "Thanks for nothing, Messi ")... and hilariously, there's a non-zero chance we end up with the exact same Final as in 2021, after which América cried to high heaven about the unfairness of the format, and Concacaf promptly caved and brought back the home-and-away Final for the following CCL.
For those of us Stateside: Four teams remain in the race for @Concacaf’s top club crown! @TheChampions returns on @FS1 with @JohnStrong and @StuHolden calling all four Semifinal round matches.🔗: https://t.co/Irpwn0mLeX pic.twitter.com/gHcUq1HGzr— FOX Sports PR (@FOXSportsPR) April 22, 2024
With the first legs in the books, the current records among the semifinalists: CF Monterrey - 12 pts CF Pachuca - 11 pts Club América - 10 pts Columbus Crew - 9 pts So, if Monterrey turn things around and win their semifinal, they're guaranteed to host the Final. OTOH, if Columbus hold on, then they're heading back to Mexico UNLESS they win the second leg AND América win their semifinal with another draw, either on away goals or on penalties.
Don't really think you can debate that the best two teams in the tournament are none other than our Finalists So, it's Pachuca hosting Columbus in early June (potentially Saturday, June 1) for all the marbles!
