Sorry, I said this yesterday, but make it tomorrow instead - I was having trouble understanding the chronology of points changes for 1930 already and still don't understand it properly yet (especially regarding Avar and Smistik). Anyway, hopefully tomorrow I can make sense of it (and then understand the changes in the vote of Gutigut too - like I said, understandably his website has been updated re: his newest calls, so there isn't a record of the original ones - if @IceBlood34 or @Gutigut do know what they were for the 1930s, before the adjustments, of course I'd appreciate the confirmation and it might help me speed up my posting tomorrow)

Just in case I didn't write that clearly enough: @Gutigut if you still have a record of what your choices had previously been (when @IceBlood34 spotted your website and we incorporated your votes on here) for the 1930s I'd definitely appreciate you confirming what they were for me. Thanks.

Of course if you didn't write it down and now forgot exactly what they had been then don't worry about it - I would try to make sense of the voting chronology like I was trying (and failing at that point) to do yesterday. It is much easier if I can just make adjustments based on your confirmation if possible though (to be fair I possibly should have written your original votes on a spreadsheet, but I only did that for the votes we received at the start of this endeavour and some others that we used that had already been posted on other threads, and for more recent ones I'd just been adding points to the overall tallies - given you didn't originally post your choices on the forum I guess it would have been sensible for me or someone to make a record of them though, in hindsight).

I'm going to skip forwards to the 1940s for today, to get the standings updated for Gutigut's adjustments. I'll come back to the 1930s over the weekend (I think maybe I had made a correction between one update and the next and that is what was confusing me, or something like that).

I think what probably happened is I used a version of the 1930s standings that was too old (a later one having replaced it) when I added on Gutigut's points for that decade.

You had found the correct one IceBlood I think, but then obviously I was re-doing things to make the points system 6-4-3-2 for his votes.

I'll double check over the weekend but that probably explains why I was having difficulty (so actually Gutigut's adjustments have caused me to correct that!).

So hopefully it will be easy enough to do the latest (correct) 1930s summary over the weekend, and then make a start with the 1910s where I remember there was some doubt about the points totals too, for different reasons.

I would question Ronaldo as high as three if looking at 95-96 season at PSV, he spent two thirds of the season injured, and there was no significant international competition.

All of his high positions in 1996 FIFA award and Ballon d'or are based of his ridiculously good start to 96-97 season, not end of 95-96 season at PSV. For context he was in ESM team of month once in the entire 95-96 season.

@IceBlood34 I've highlighted some relevant names in green, to indicate where some points have been being added/removed etc, but given I'd used the wrong update like I said before then I think the best thing to do when it comes to your presentation of top 5 standings, templates etc is to check these new standings for each year in full.

Kudos for the write-ups on your site @Gutigut - I am having another look at the 1930s ones now (to help verify we've got everything correct now) and I think especially for years so long ago you have done an excellent job putting together descriptive words about the players and their seasons....

Yes, for sure that took a lot of work! I know @IceBlood34 has been interested in that historical scoring data too himself (and where possible assist data, but it becomes harder/impossible the further back in time we go).

On this thread he was just interested to canvass ideas/opinions about the best players of each year/season (with some leeway for people to prioritise one or the other) in a 'Ballon d'Or esque' vote. The points are the results of all the votes.

Great. You know whether he identified all 315 assists, or whether he found a smaller sample and extrapolated an estimate from those (which I think some guys have been doing on Twitter and elsewhere for example)?

    @PDG1978 and everybody
In the continuation of the discussion we had about Brazil 1949/1950, I found this article by Djukitch in France Football :
    In short :
"Ademir has scored 4 goals against a terrified Sweden but Brazil most of all pay homage to Zizinho"

"Ademir scored 4 out of 7 goals but in my opinion the most precious player in the forward line was Zizinho who... did not score a single goal. Zizinho is the worker of a team of which Ademir is the brilliant shooter and Jair is the matador". [...]
"Zizinho is the sheep dog of the Brazilian team". [...]
"Zizinho is not a so elegant footballer. But he is cunning/ crafty, audacious, he admirably understands the collective game, possesses an inextinguishable breath and fights from end to end of a match without getting discouraged". [...]
"Whittaker, the manager of England, assesses that Zizinho is the most complete player of Brazil, or more precisely that he is the most useful to his team. The English referee Barrick, on his side, thinks that he is the only one Brazilian footballer who could play overnight in an English team."

In the right corner, about Jair, they say that "he is the elder of the team (by experience but also quite by age), that he is an immovable starter of the team, that he has a perfect technique, is an extraordinary conductor of the game, with a nervous, sharp, jerky dribbling but millimetrically precise, with sometimes a subtle "paw kick" to reap the benefits. And his attitude in front of disarmed opponents brings to mind the attitude of the matador at the end of a majestuous veronica.
But Jair has the defaults of his qualities, he is a lord who is conscious of his market value. He seems to fully play only at the occasions that he estimates to be interesting. It is true that as he doesn't always have partners of his height on his team, he sometimes seems to discourage himself and falls into apathy. Which outrages the burning supporters. On the other hand, with the Brazilian team, he is always unchained."

11 years later, still in FF, his brief profile :
JAIR (Brazil). ___ Inside left of the Brazilian Team runner-up of the 1950 World Cup, he was an astonishing juggler and handler of the ball.

Is it fine now to make the standings? Or should I wait your summary for 1910s and backwards?

It depends how you want to do it I guess mate doesn't it, but if pre-1920s is to be considered part of your project I guess it is only complete once that is included (even as approximated as the votes have to be for that period, based on interpreting the writings of others who lived at the time I suppose). I mean, you could separate it out and do a 1920-2023 summary, but I guess you still want pre-1920 included on this thread at least?

Maybe you could start making your top 10s templates for later years though (from 1950, from 1946, from 1920 or however you might like....)? Those should now be decided for many years in effect I suppose shouldn't they?
