Dear Baby Jesus, Please, PLEASE, PLEASE make this happen. The exploding heads of the Cosmos and NASL nostalgia addicts would be glorious. Love, ElJefe
Dear god just let the Cosmos name die in peace. We really want the "Galaxy" to take on the "Cosmos"? Ugh. One stellar name is fine. Two, and the jokes start flying.
Hope Nick has saved his pennies to pay off Pepe, cause he will never allow it unless he gets a few million and even then he may not allow Philly to have it. He holds on to all those rights like an old lady holds on to knick knacks and pennies.
Last year Shep Messing said that Red Bulls were in negotiations with Pepe to buy the name. It may be that his nearly 15 year strategy to hold out for his price may pay off after all. Cosmos in Philly? Doesn't work.
Pepe owns the name 'New York Cosmos.' Nobody owns 'Philadelphia Cosmos.' Nobody has to pay Pepe shit.
My first thought was that Cosmos doesn't fit or belong on a Philly team. Then I read this post: Anything to piss off those old Cosmos fanboys is a good thing in my book.
I vote for the Philadelphia Star Cluster F**kers FC...I know it's along name but it all works out when they play the Galaxy.
As someone who proudly wore a NY Cosmos iron-on in the fourth grade, I think this is the most awesomest thing EVER.
I could go on a few paragraph rant about trademark law to prove you wrong, but i don't really have the time. So i am just gonna say you are very likely wrong.
Hmmm well lets think about how well that would hold-up. Defunct team name from defunct league tried to enforce team in different city in a different league from using the same name. Can anyone think of professional teams in the United States or Canada with overlapping names? Carolina Panthers Florida Panthers New York Giants San Francisco Giants (Yes I know the historical significance of this) Phoenix Suns Connecticut Sun Chicago Fire Portland Fire (Folded 2002) Washington Wizards Kansas City Wizards Los Angeles Galaxy Frankfurt Galaxy (Defunct German team whose name was/is owned by the NFL) Houston Oilers (Prior to move to Tennessee) Edmonton Oilers Atlanta Chiefs Kansas City Chiefs Denver Rockies (NHL moved to New Jersey) Colorado Rockies The only real example of this type of trademark being upheld was with the Baltimore CFL Colts because the NFL still owned Baltimore Colts. The chances of Philadelphia Cosmos being disallowed due to trademark violations is very unlikely.
Just for fun, Here are a few more of the top of my head: NY Jets Winnapeg Jets (Defunct NHL and WHA Team) Texas Rangers NY Rangers LA Kings Kansas City/Omaha Kings moved to Sacramento Detroit Express (Defunct NASL Team) LA Express (Defunct USFL Team) Portland Storm (Defunct WFL Team) Seattle Storm (WNBA) St. Louis Cardinals (MLB) St. Louis Cardinals moved Arizona BC Lions (CFL) Detroit Lions Tenesee Titans NY Titans became the NY Jets Dallas Texans (AFL) became the Houston Oilers Houston Texans Michigan Panthers (Defunct USFL Team) Florida Panthers Caralina Panthers Washington Senators (MLB) became Texas Rangers Ottawa Senators (NHL)
I dunno. I wonder how many. I, for one, could care less about reviving the Cosmos. I respect the heritage, but the name is bad and, unless someone can come up with a great design to change my mind, I'd rather let it stay in the past. When I say 'design', what I mean is something like the Seattle Sounders FC mockups that looked sweet and were on Big Soccer awhile back. I didn't want to keep the name Sounders, but they took it and made it fashionable. Of course, the final design might not do that.
This would be a horrendous joke in more ways than I can count. For those of us who loved NASL, this would be an outrage. Makes as much sense as the Washington Cowboys or the Chicago Packers. ...Now, on the other hand, if it ticks off New Yorkers, then there is the silver lining I'm looking for...
