I'm not interested in foreign players. I'm interested in the prospects of USWNT players and prospective USWNT players.
Do to March Madness, I’ve only watched an handful of NWSL highlights. But scoring wise, foreign players are indeed dominating as only 3 Americans are in the top 9 scorers so far(two goals or more). Of these; Sophie Smith scored her brace in the season opener, but looked awful next one as twice she ran downfield to score, only to be called back(she was offsides by an mile away) KC’smid, DiBernadino got two goals, but probably more do to fwds Chawinga & Bia able to push the ball upfield & thus setting the pace for the rest of the team. DiBernadino was giving an shot at NT during Jill Ellis days Ally Sentor has two goals for Utah , could be US best ‘new’prospect as she’s got an ‘wicked’ median range shot & was all over the place vs Washington. She’s only 20 years old otherwise current foreign domination in the scoring department could be an scary thing; all five goals in the Bay/Dash match scored by foreigners, Orlando starting as many as four Brazilians. NWSL depending right now on too many speed burners
I used to watch a decent amount of NWSL when there were a bunch of US-eligibles. Turning a match on and seeing like 3 US-eligibles is what drove me away. I'm trying to reinvigorate my interest in the league, which is why I started this thread. For me, watching a WSL match with a prominent US player and watching a NWSL match with a prominent American player is the same. And, I think NWSL is probably following the same pattern that MLS does: emphasizing foreign attacking players, thereby squelching US attacking players. Not that I got that out of my system. I watched the 1st have of KC/LA, each team had a promising-looking young American (in addition to Alyssa). I'll check back in after watching the 2nd half. DiBernardo's play in the first half was impressive. Yes, her whole team was dominating, but she was part of that domination. This is probably a bad year to start a FotW thread. No one is going to come out of nowhere to make the Oly roster. And, players like DiBernardo won't be around for 2027, I mean, not on the pitch. Most importantly: thank you for your response.
DiBernadino got 2 goals/2 assists in three games, one would think she’ll get the call up if she continues in that pace, Sentor as well. Di going turn 32 next month however it’s probably now or never for her Albert, Johannes & Gaiteno practically out of thin air to SheBa. It shows that Emma wants to Euro-nize the USWNT. Would say be careful what you ask for as for cuz her Chelsea tactics this last Sunday empathetic to watch; using an 4-4-2 with the bottom 8 barely getting out of its defensive rectangular formation, showed not much mobility trying to move frontwards—-3 shots on goal in 120 minutes of playing time/zero goals scored proved. Much more emphasis on dribbling skills is what apparently she was looking at as it was very tight/cramped within the rectangle area. Just don’t see this as an good fit for our American style soccer long balls & dribble drives
Re: Emma, I was for hiring Ellis from South Africa. On the call ups, KA has been in the group, Yohannes had to be called in based on performance and risk of losing her. Gaetano, is the suprise. For me, I don't want to judge EH on the one call up. Thank you for the informative reply!
One of the reasons I like this thread is because of its title. I think of "Flavor of the Week" as referring to someone who had a good game or two recently, so posters start calling for NT call ups. It's something that posters seem to have a penchant for. (I am not referring to DiBernardo, who has a long track record and has been in NT camps in the past.)
It's borrowd from the men's side. Ya, it has a kind of a mocking "here today gone tomorrow" tone. But, that thread, year in,year out is super iinformative about US-eligible players. And no one is shouting about calling for NT call-ups. Maybe that's a women's team fan thing, not a men's team fan thing?
Finished watching the match Claire Hutton, 18, was very good in central midfield for KC. A very coimplete game. Kennedy Fuller looked like she fit in Angel City's midfield. She's only 17. And, I was impressed with Madison Curry at fullback for Angel City. I guess she's a rookie reserve, playing b/c injuries to others. I thought she played well.
@RalleeMonkey just found this off an German site, US got 3 of the top 7, but not sure if it means best u19 players or just who gets the best paid. Which ever it is, it shows an good future for US soccer. Not familiar with all the names, might be another American in this group
Thank you. I’m surprised the gap between Caicedo and everyone else isn’t bigger. Yes, that’s impressive.
going with FOTMOB's updated power rankings of the NWSL, FotMob rating - NWSL 2024 stats USWNT members aren't looking too good, a sample #1 Rodman #5 Coffey but then it falls way down #39 Smith #43 Swanson #80 Morgan #165 Moultrie #166 Dunn #170 Shaw(yikes, since many feel she's the US current best player) if we go by FOTMOB's positional rankings, this should be USWNT srarting lineup instead Bethune..............Sentnor...........Rodman ............................Sanchez ................Kornieck........Coffey..... Picket...........Girma,,,,,Staab.......Izzy Rodriguez .............................Haught some might not find FOTMOB credible but they got the WSL ratings quite accurate with an dozen Lionesses in the top 30
This is awesome. Thank you. I think in the lead up to the Olympics, we've got to go with what we've got. But, after the Olympics, everything should be up for grabs. An, interesting thing is last I checked, the Thorns were loaded with talent, including Moultrie, Smith, and Coffey. Smith has been very poor finishing - and her NT finishing hasn't been very good. Aside from that, I've thought Moultrie has looked good from what I've seen. I wonder if she's being dragged down by the team, ratings-wise? I watched the first half of the Courage Thorns match. Sanchez, to me, was kind of hit or miss. Her passing accuracy on basic passes was not great. But, then she'd do something spectacular - like very 10-ish. Aside: Does NWSL have another color announcer besides that Leanne woman? I can't stand announcers that second guess every single time a team loses the ball. "She should have ...." Well, Leanne, "She" is better than you ever were, so you definitely would have done worse. It's like every single change of possession. And, she just flat out has diarrhea of the mouth. She never stops. Why is the US media so enamored of having people w/ a Brit accent announcing soccer anyway? There's probably 100 former USWNT players who would jump at the chance to announce these games. Angela Hucles anyone?
Add: The post-Olympics era will be a new and very different era for the USWNT. With the guaranteed contracts gone, and the "guaranteed contracts privilege" aging out, the manager will be able to call in who she wants, when she wants. And, with the next WC not coming for 3 years, and the pool being young, she should look at a lot of players. An effect of this is that the player pool will lose the artificial power they had over the manager. They will not be able to Sermani the manager. (the same Sermani who brought in future World No 1 player, but team outsider Sam Mewis). Julie Foudy famously said that she was able to choose three roster spots each go-round. That poison is gone with the guaranteed contracts. There is no longer a player whose ass must be kissed in order to make the squad.
Olympics is like Russian roulette as it can be very unpredictable what can happen due to shortened 18 roster & playing every 3rd day(instead 4 like the WC). Helping the US is only 3 Euro teams allowed—-with the possibility of actually only facing Germany due to being a group opponent—-which could be beatable since apparently they still stuck in Kaiser Franz, sweeper mode(hopelessly outdated due to the rise of modern day speed burning wingers). So while the future could be brighter, we really got to the current advantage the Olympics format gives us. The World Cup obviously more prestigious but less obtainable as quite a few Euro nations have over taken us——I mean we couldn’t even beat Portugal—and they’ve just been demoted to B status(that means there’s 16 Euro teams above them). we do what we do best—throw money at the dire situation(NWSL 14 pro clubs/buy an overhyped NT coach), but now consider just announced Catlin Clark’s $20 million plus contract with Nike —-as compared very few female soccer still only lucky enough to get one million dollar endorsement deals, makes me feel that basketball will steal many of our future soccer prospects
Interesting points. I would not use the WC to calibrate our level. That team was way less than the sum of its parts. Yep, less Euro teams means less competition, generally speaking. Clark's contract is an anomaly. We'll see how much it carries over to other players. I remember when Dot Richards and the softball team were the big story. Women's March Madness will drive a lot of interest. From what I understand, Clark played soccer until she was 16. She was good, but I have no idea how good.
new NWSL power rankings in Sawnson..........Bethune........Rodman .........................Feist. ..............Kornieck......Coffey Picket.......Mckeown....Staab......Millet ......................Haracic and the way KC dominating the league, this might be Vlatko's new favorite song! .........
the power ranking is for the combined five games played so far this season NWSL 2024 top rated players, goals, assists and other stats there's about 20 individual categories they pick from to get the overall top rated players/some of these are based n per game though FotMob rating - NWSL 2024 stats
I believe Kornieck goes by Flint now. From her Wiki: "Formerly Taylor Kornieck, she married Bailey Flint and began using her married name in 2024."
Thanks for the info. Normally I tend to miss this kind of news and, months down the road, I easily go on record for something along the lines of "Very interesting player, this Flint: I had never heard of her before! ".
