I don't know if anyone watched the show "Sfide" last night on RAI International. If you did, they had a segment about Totti and Rivera being similar. Now, forget Totti's attitude. Look at their skills. Some of the higlights they showed of Rivera and Totti showed that they are so alike. Some of the goals both of them have scored are carbon copies. Another similarity is that Rivera was captain and symbol of Milan, while Totti is captain and symbol of Roma. Discuss.
i dont see totti as a legend at all. he might be when he retires, but right now, hes just another extremely talented player. he really hasnt done a friggin thing as far as i see it. might be his own fault though, as hes willingly stuck in the football cemetery that is roma. comparing him with Rivera is football sacrilege at this point.
Im gonna agree with Duck right there, and thats huge for me because me and Duck dont get along when it comes to discussing alot. But cmon your talking about one of the if not the best italian that there ever was compared to Totti. Rivera won trophies and Totti has won nothing its too early to compare but i do see a similar playing style except for the fact that Rivera saw something on the pitch that Totti will never have
I agree. I dont think Totti will ever be considered a "legend", even when he's retired. Maybe he'll be a legend to Roma fans, but to the rest of the world he'll just be another great player. He has only really done "one friggin thing" and won a scudetto. Rivera is a legend. They actually did that pretty good. I never knew ex-Roma technical director Franco Baldini was a player until I saw that. It broke my heart watching, as Milan staged an amazing comeback against Cesena to bring themselves to safety, or so they thought. Stupid Napoli let Genoa equalize and put Milan in B.
Dont get me wrong i may seem just pr juventino, but i am roman i was born there and roma is one of my favorite teams, but i just dont consider totti at that level yet. Hell some players really hit there best when they are older, they just see the pitch in a different way, im not saying baggio was at his best when he was at brescia but he just saw something that no one else saw, it was his age and vision and hard work that really put him among the legends. I think totti will hit that part of his career when he is older, and he will win a champs league when his attitude is better theres no doubt about it, but you have to mix skill and attitude its a neccesity, you must be humble to win everything and when totti is humble i have no doubts he will be one of the legends even more so than the likes of platini and zidane
I was also surprised to see Baldini. And Colomba. And an incredibly young Roberto Mancini. This show is great. I love the music they use. What about the play which led to the corner and Genoa's equalizer - the goalie basically threw the ball out of bounds. Talk about fixed!
Yeah, Sfide is great, they pick great soccer topics. The music they use gets your attention and you become part of the show. I remember they reviewed Euro 2000 and interviewed some of the players from the squad. That was my favorite one yet. Francesco Toldo said of the France final "La prima volta che io ho pianto per un partita di calcio..." (The first time I cried for a soccer game...)
Rivera was an all time great, Totti is not anywhere near him yet and I doubt he ever will achieve what Rivera did. As for single talent, Totti is definitely more talented (in my opinion).
Well I haven't really had much of a chance to watch Rivera but from what little highlights I have seen of him I know he was a great player but Totti seems much stronger and more comfortable with the ball. I think Totti is very under-rated right now and I think the other year when he scored those 20 goals for Roma and lead Roma to 2nd place in Serie A, he should have won the European footballer of the year.
Rivera is obviously the better player and the only who deserves the "legend" tag. Bad coaches had decided Rivera's fate in the Squadra Azzurra and not self-destruction or poor temperament. In Totti's case, he can only be a Roma legend, never an Italian legend. He has scored more goals in a Roma jumper than anyone else but when he is compared to Rivera, he is a clueless human being. When comparing their two styles, Rivera can play better as a team player than Totti and Rivera isn't as selfish. Styling his hair and that's it. Maybe free-kick taking but I can't confirm that.
How does one get the channel "Sfide," Cassano? As for this debate . . . I think a better comparison is Rivera to Pirlo. Both are elegant midfielders, both will have played for Milan and regularly competed for the European cup, both were fundamentally great passers without much physical strength. I believe Galliani recently pointed out the similarity of the two. Totti's mix of power and class make him a bit of an oddball. Also, you really have to wonder how much Totti would have accomplished had he been playing for Milan or Juve or Madrid all these years. I'm guessing things would be much different than they look now. (One Scudetto).

It's not a channel, it's a TV show. You have to get RAI International, and it comes on every Thursday night.
Yeah, you're right. I think it was Thursdays last year. I can't watch Milan-Fire because my stupid cable company only has Fox Soccer Channel, so I'll only be able to watch Sfide...
