Could he, would he, do we want him? Looks like Frank Lampard may be coming to MLS this season which means LA has to drop a Designated player. Would Robbie be a good fit with the Revs? Would he boost attendance? Would he even want to play here?
A good question, but I'd say no. Brace vs. Chicago aside (one of which was a PK) Keane has been extremely underwhelming (I'd even say a borderline bust) in a Galaxy uniform and isn't worth his price tag. Plus, at least for this season the Revs are all set at forward.
We need help on the back line now but even if we wanted him no way the Revs would pick up a third DP and pay the required $250,000 "luxury tax."
Robbie Keane is an in-betweener: neither a great goalscorer nor a great creator. MLS is not good enough to carry him as a 90-minute player and not big enough to support expensive luxury players. Given the kind of running game Heaps wants to play I'd rather a Revs DP be a central midfielder who can keep the ball moving under pressure. Usually DPs are spent on creators and finishers but I don't think the Revs need those right now and I don't think either Shalrie or Benny can give the Revs what they really need.
This. We have two DPs, taking a third means we get whacked financially. Unless Shalrie comes off the books after the season, I don't think we see another DP in the immediate future.
Doesn't your third DP not even count for that much against the cap? We get penalized somewhere else, I'm pretty sure, but I just don't know what exactly happens. DP is a somewhat baffling system.
Really wanted the Revs to make a move for him the first time around, but not now - most over paid penalty taker ever...
I would imagine he'd command a high salary but it would probably be brought down by allocation money to avoid having a third DP.
I'm pretty sure that he wouldn't be a DP. If a USMNT player returns as a DP then they are not subject to the allocation order. Essentially, if he does come back as a DP then the Revs don't have the first chance to get him, he'll be free to sign with whoever wants to pay him.
If I said "no thanks", would that break the internet? Not a fan. Let's keep the youth movement going.
Interesting, I never heard of this. Of course I don't think this has ever occurred before either. Only three Americans in history have been DP's. Donovan Reyna, who signed in January Adu, who was not a DP when signed in August by Philly and became one in the offseason. Do you have a link that describes this more? I could not find that specific item in the 2012 roster rules http://www.mlssoccer.com/2012-mls-roster-rules
Methinks that the next Galaxy DP to leave the City of Angels will be Landon Donavan. He just put his house on the market and could be headed back to England http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbi...sale-amid-rumours-fancies-return-England.html That clears room on the roster for Lampard
I had heard something along those lines as well, but I can't find a specific link. IIRC, basically if a team wanted a returning US nat and would pay him DP money, they could do it, unless there was another team who also wanted that player and also would make him a DP. This was in the days of single DPs, so the clubs were more careful about these kinds of things than they are now. If he wasn't a DP but just a high-salaried player, then he'd go through the whole process. I believe Reyna was an example of this. He wanted to go to his hometown team, they were willing to make him a DP while no one else would (maybe because they knew he wouldn't want to play for Columbus or Chivas or us), so they let them work it out. Everyone was happy, well, at least until he got injured...
It is sad how bad my memory. Did MLS have the official allocation process back in 2007 when Reyna signed? It seems like it has been in only recent years that we have talked about allocation order.
Nope. Toronto was actually number one in the allocation order at the time, and Chicago orchestrated a trade with them for the number one spot.
I don't believe he was ever considered a DP. FWIW, here are his salaries for the 2008 and 2009. http://www.mlsplayers.org/files/9_7_08_salary_info_club.pdf http://www.mlsplayers.org/files/3_15_09_salary_info_club.pdf I believe back then you had to make over $400k in 2008 and $415k in 2009 to be considered a DP.
And who could forget the Chicago fans getting their undies in a bunch because T'ronna wanted to get the most value they could for the #1 allocation spot, instead of just letting him go to the Fire for nuthin because he was a hometown guy and his wife liked it in the Windbag City
