Oops ... ended up editing my Premiership post instead of replying to it. Data includes all league matches from 92-93 on ... ignores players like Potts and Rachubka who decided not to play for the US ... my main source was http://geocities.com/fapremleague, with 2004/05 data pulled from Yahoo. Incidentally, I don't think there were many American EPL players before 92-93. Harkes had one season, and Wegerle had a few, but iirc wasn't an American at the time.
There were two guys from the 1930 WC team, Alexander Wood and James Brown, who may have played in the first division in the 1930's....Brown was with Brentford in the 1935-36 season, and Wood played a few years with Leicester City.
I'm not aware of many US players in most of the other top European leagues ... Serie A http://www2.raisport.rai.it/mcalcio/956a/c00072.htm Lalas 33 games, 2 goals, 2 own goals La Liga Española http://es.sports.yahoo.com/fo/profiles/4984.html Keller 51 games, 0 goals Ligue 1 Regis 245 games, 3 goals Vanney 49 games, 0 goals ---- Eredivisie (vi.nl) Appearances Earnie Stewart 357 John O'Brien 85 Gregg Berhalter 66 Damarcus Beasley 29 Cory Gibbs 15 Charles Kazlauskas 11 Goals Stewart 94 Beasley 6 O'Brien 5 Berhalter 2 Gibbs 1
A couple other early Yanks Abroad: Eddy Hamel: 125 games, 8 goals for Ajax from 1922-1930. Ed McIlvenny, of the 1950 World Cup team: 2 games for Manchester United in 1950-51.

Good question ... my guess is Zak Whitbread, who has since gone to Millwall on loan, although David Yelldell and Kenny Cooper seem like other possibilities. For really hard trivia, I'd be very impressed if someone could name the nine players from 2001/02. With work, I got up to seven, only one of whom played significant minutes that year. [RESULT] Jeff Cassar - Bolton (loan) Ian Feuer - Derby County (loan) Brad Friedel - Blackburn Marcus Hahnemann - Fulham Kasey Keller - Spurs Eddie Lewis - Fulham Joe-Max Moore - Everton[/RESULT]
Claudio Reyna played for Sunderland in 2001-02 (bought from Rangers at midseason). Any chance the ninth "American" was Paul Rachubka?
Oops. Could be, in which case he and Joe-Max were the only EPL Americans in 2000/01. Along the same lines, soccerbase.com lists Boaz Myhill as having begun his Aston Villa career at the start of the 2001/02 season. Presumably, one of them was counted as American, the other wasn't. (Neither got into a game.) Either way, it looks like 6 of 9 were goalkeepers.

At the moment, we're approaching the end of a sort of Golden Age. The five US-raised players with the most top-flight appearances are all currently in top-flight leagues ... but not for too much longer. I remember that Espen Baardsen started for Everton in McBride's first game there. I'm not sure whether Baardsen should count, but he was born and raised here and was even in our youth player pools briefly.

John O'brien could be a good one, he was good when he played at Ajax Amsterdam, but I feel sorry for him that he is made of glass. Where does he play now??
Well, I think that he played at Sparta Rotterdam after he quit Ajax Amsterdam. I honestly dont know where he plays atm.
