Giovinco was a non factor and couldn't even get anything started as the Quakes shut him down and played great defense. It was 9 vs. 11 from the 54th minute on, or rather for a total of 40 minutes including 4 minutes of added time. The ref gave two straight red cards to both Panamanians , Aníbal Godoy (42nd minute) and Alberto Quintero (53rd) but they didn't even look like they should have been yellows. It was only the referees second MLS match and his inexperience showed. The TV commentators were saying the DisCo would overturn at least one of the reds but I somehow doubt it. San Jose put forth a gutsy performance and Simon Dawkins scored a beautiful goal on the counterattack with a hard outside shot from the top of the box. Defender Victor Bernardez played awesome and GK David Bingham was saving everything. It was a great way to celebrate Italian Heritage night with the San Jose Earthquakes supporting and donating to the Little Italy San Jose project. It was a great game! Go Quakes!
PRO was always a one step backward to take two steps forward at some point in the future proposition... I'm guessing the league would have imagined we'd be in full forward mode by now... The argument for the American player pool is that too many elite athletes turn to other sports...don't know if that dynamic could at all be in play with officiating...don't think so... The reality though is clear...a middling league has unsurprisingly I guess middling officiating...

for us old-times who happened to be around in the old NASL days of the 70's and 80's, the referees are MUCH better now- consider that bit of good-bad news for today's officiating 1 area- as i have stated before-for the MLS to grow and develop is officiating- but the realization must come that for some MLS refs, regardless of how much training, instructing and workshops the MLS gives to them, they will not get better- DP refs are needed- money will make people walk to a new league
Maybe the officials are better but everything else from the rules, speed , playing surfaces , team stability and organization are different now than from the old NASL days. Today's MLS (foreign superstar) players aren't really superior to their old NASL counterparts but its a different game. The two straight red card fouls called last night against the Quakes wouldn't even have even been given or merited a warning 30-40 years ago.
FYP. The summer tournaments are showing something I've thought for a while. This game can no longer be officiated well by just 3 referees. There needs to be a change in how officiating works in soccer before this gets better, its hardly a MLS-only problem. (And no, I don't think replay is the solution)
If you really think the NASL was in a better spot at any point than MLS is now then I don't know what world you're living in.
