What does everyone think? I was always a fan of Sutton. I always thought he should have gotten a fairer shot with the national team. I know his Chelsea season was a disaster based on his goal scoring. One goal during a whole season for someone up front is pretty weak, but I always thought he was unfairly slandered after his Chelsea experience. He's the kind of player than can have an impact without necessarily scoring. On the flipside, I think it's hard to gauge how well someone will do based upon playing in Scotland. He is also 33 and is probably getting on a bit. My guess is that he won't be a phenomenal signing, but he won't be the dud that a lot are expecting.
He did well in Scotland but it's clear he was no longer wanted. But CF's tend to age well given the right service he should get some goals.
Well he only needs to score 2 goals to do better than his last season in England so I'm sure he will be a great hit.
It's hard to gauge how well he will do based upon playing in Scotland? Sutton was an integral part of a side that beat Blackburn, Liverpool, Barcelona, Ajax, Porto, Valencia, Juventus, Celta Vigo, Stuttgart, Lyon, Anderlecht, Rosonberg, Boavista, Basle, Shakhtar Donetsk and drawing with Milan, B Munich and Villareal and he scored in many of those games, against sides who would all fit in well in the Premiership. It is clear from his time in Scotland that Sutton has been a top quality player over the past few years who could easily performed very well in the Premiership. I totally agree that he doesn't need to score goals to play well. This is really shown by the fact that he can play well as a striker, in midfield and in defence. For the past couple of seasons at Celtic he has usually played in midfield, so his scoring record has been very impressive. The real question about Sutton is to do with his age, as you say he's getting on a bit and hes hardly played this season due to injury. I'd say if he can show the form he has for the most part in Scotland he will be a huge success for Birmingham but if his poor recent fitness due to injuries takes its toll and his age shows then he still won't be too much of a flop IMO. That said the guy is an ************** and a bad loser
If he can get around 5-10 goals to the end of the season then it could help Birmingham stay up, they need to start scoring more goals to have a chance.
My view is that he's needed as a goalscorer, but his best position is at the back (due to his age (& versatility)), so he'll probably bomb.......................
