http://sports.yahoo.com/soccer/news?slug=ap-argentina-usexhibition ...back the Meadowlands for a friendly. Up the USA!
Now the question becomes: will most of the stadium actually be cheering for the US, unlike last time? Or will the posers be out in full force, as usual?
It's sad, isn't it? I wish I could go, but being a broke college student doesn't allow alot of flexibility during the school year.
Nice, this should be a very good match. Argentina isn't that much better than us and I definitely think we can get the result. Looking forward to it!
ask 4 things 1) who is the president of Argentina 2) The capitol of Argentina 3) what country did Argentina go to war with over a certain off-the-mainland Islands (and name these Islands) 4) And the real kicker, what is the official National sport of Argentina?
and post these interview's on youtube after to see many 0 for 4's with a few 1 of 4 because of Buenos Aires should be a known city.
The national sport is Pato. Its sort of like Polo On a general note, is this game an Argentina "home" game? Might explain why they shifted it from Seattle to New York.
While I'd like fans of the game in the US to support the US, why does it matter if they can answer questions about the nation itself. Speaking for England alone, its very common for people to root for teams based on players and history and not the nation itself. There are folks who I met in South Africa who have no idea how baseball is played but they had on US jerseys. A friend of mine who has lived in Northwest England his entire life is a diehard USMNT fan and was wearing red white and blue a few years ago for the friendly at Wembley. An Everton fan who knew of just Joe Max-Moore and just so happened to catch a game in the morning and has been addicted since... Is he anti-England? No... Is he an American poser? No... He's just a fan of our work ethic. For whatever reason people support Argentina in the US I'm fine with it. Complain all you want about the "posers', at least they buy the jerseys and tickets to the game. These ticket sales are what attract Argentina to the US. Otherwise we'll be playing friendlies in half filled RB Arena against Senegal.
^^^ No simply all of the fans that root for Argentia are usually spanish... Thats why in every game the US plays at home there's a shit tons of opponent fans at the game since it's america and alot of nationalities in here. I doubt the typical US soccer fan will root for Argentina..
And there's lots in Argentina too,but when they play at home it's all pro-argentine I bet. This country has always had a bad case of bandwagon fans that's all.
Exactly. This reminds me of a ussoccer video from I think one or two years back. The interviewer was talking to a caucasian woman who had grew up in the U.S. her entire life, but she came to the game decked out in Mexico fan stuff for the US-Mexico game. During the World Cup, when a guy interviewed the England fans after the US-England game, I was quite surprised to see an American guy decked out in white and red face pant with a red England jersey on. I'm not saying that they're necessarily wrong, but it's just iffy seeing people do that. You can root for other countries, but you can't at least root for your home country in games? I root for Spain only when I can't root for the USMNT and USWNT. It's just...weird. Don't get me wrong, I love the diversity that we have here. It's cool that you want to root for the countries of your heritage, but you're also American, and it's getting annoying to see our home games looking like away games. At the Poland game in October, I guarantee that the majority of the Polish fans there were fourth generation with no other connection to Poland other than through their great-grandparents. That would almost be like me, as an African American, rooting for Nigeria, for example, just because they're an African team, even though I have no personal connection with the continent other than the fact that my ancestors came from there a long time ago.
If a fan wants to spend 80 bucks on Messi jersey, 60 on a ticket and another 20 parking then go ahead. The greatest marketing device is winning and that showed at the WC. I feel like none of you understand that of international fans support the "team" itself... Not the nation. I take no slight to the US military men who were rooting for Mexico in 2009 at the Azteca. Because when push comes to shove they support America. I'm sure a few of those Argentina fans on the 26th are US veterans or soldiers. Just because some 20 year old kid who was born in Jersey, parents were born in Jersey and he's actuallyGerman roots for Argentina is nothing to scoff at. When the US visits Europe, not all of the "American" fans in the stands are actually American. I know this as I have been to many games where this is true. American fans who support Argentina have nothing against the United States or their fellow country men. They just like their football team better than ours. Just because a guy can't name Argentina's national sports, which is being contested as we speak, doesn't make him any less of a football fan... Every year American citizens are quizzed on home country no brainers and amazing statistics are released on their stupidity.
A buddy of mine, US fan, invited me to that game two years ago and from where we were sitting, there was plenty of US fans at the game. There was a decent chunk of Argentine fans in the upper decks singing and dancing but to say that most of the stadium was supporting Argentina doesn't seem right. At least from what I remember.
As a follow up to this I can state that I have met people from Argentina, as well as those born in America to Argentinian parent(s), who cheer for Italy and claim to be Italian because their last name ends with and "i" and their great great grandfather emigrated to the Americas in 1885. The problem is not unique to America.
you want to know the problem? America. simple. People won't admitt that they are american. They'll say "im german, italian, greek, jewish,..." even though 1) they have never been to those countries, or speak the language at minimum. 2) it was their 4 great grandparents that came here. It's all because the ********ing government, as much as they deny it, promote division amongst everyone here. Look at a ********ing job application caucasian hispanic hispanic of african descent (seriously - i dont know 1 "black" spanish person that will say "soy africano-dominicano") African-American African Native Islander Asian Sub-Continent Asian (basically Pakisatni, Indian ect) - I'm sure I'm missing a few more. - Well i vote for hispanic of caucasian decent (a lot of Argies are white), and, I also vote that African of Caucasian decent becasue South Africans Can be white. Oh wait, what about Spanish of asian decent? I found a lot of chinese in Lima, Peru when I lived there. Do Brazilians count as hispanic? We need another section for that! America has been seperating people since like the 20's...and they love it.
People not liking the soccer team that you think they should is not a problem. One of these things is not like the others.
This is what it boils down to. As we continue to improve we'll see more and more support for the US at these kind of games. It sucks, but a lot of American sports fans are fickle. What are you gonna do?
I don't get why this guy: http://media.ebaumsworld.com/mediaFiles/picture/368417/941267.jpg would support Italy over the US, when he is an American. Nobody will say they are American here. At least that problem exsists here in the NY area. If you are born in america, you should support america because you are american. My grandparents are from italy, i speak italian. I have been there quite a few times. i wouldnt consider supporting those grease ball, pasta loving, espresso drinking (although I love espresso) twats. All my asshole cousins support italy. I remember in the 2006 WC, my cousin calls me up and says "CAN YOU BELIEVE IT! WE WON!!!". My response was "what do you mean? we got knocked out in the group stages." I argue with them constantly. Everyone was proud to be american on/after (for a little while) 9/11...dare continue to say what I want to say?
Yes I do. I like Spain and Argentina's players. I will root for them in their friendlies. But when they go up against the USMNT, I'm going for the U.S. Was this the U.S.-Mexico game in August of that year? It isn't anything to scoff at...When Argentina isn't facing the U.S. I believe you. Just like I believe that no Spainard or Englishman is going for the USMNT against their own teams. No one ever said they did, except for one other poster, and his was a bit out there...
