I never did anything different. When will the divisiveness stop? You state that you hope his "supporters will live up to them." No need for Bush supporters to live up to them? In non-devisive language, perhaps you meant to say, "I believe we can all live up to these excellent words." Try to not be a divider.
Excellent point. The bi-partisan, non-devisive "we're all Americans" approach requires people on both sides to do it.
This is one of the reasons Kerry didn't win. The election wasn't Bush vs. Kerry. It was Bush vs. Anyone But Bush, which I believe hurt Kerry more then it helped him, as witnessed by the Guardians letter writing campaign. People don't want to be told their stupid if they vote for one guy, or pressured to do things, and often times they'll go against the advice just to prove a point (which isn't really a smart thing to do always). It's like when you're a little kid, and your mom says dont' do something, and even though you never planned on doign it in the first place, you do it anyway just because. You could have put up a cardboard cut out of Darth Vader and it would have gotten as many votes as Kerry.
This post should be required reading for the DNC. I didn't really want Bush to be reelected. However, I found John Kerry's plans for the nation ethereal (and often stupid). Running a real candidate would have attracted the votes of many more people that were undecided a year ago. Who would have had a better chance at my vote? Clark. Lieberman. Dean. Edwards. Why was Kerry nominated? When I heard that he was chosen because "he had the best chance of winning," I didn't understand. I still don't. If that was the "best chance," then the Democratic party is in more trouble than I thought.
Screw Kerry. And screw any Democrat who tries to reach across the aisle and shake hands with these bozos. The Democrats have to stand together and oppose EVERYTHING that Bush tries to pass. The Republicans admire a Democrat who likes duels? Let's bring them back to the Senate and House.
to finish off the sentence started by the thread title... "...with video cameras in our bedrooms, taps on our phones, sons and daughters dead in iraq and a sore back cause we couldnt afford a nice bed and we dont have any health care."
Barb, you HAVE actually read Mike's posts for years now, haven't you? Par for the "out-there" course.
No, Mike's post is silly because there is no way the Democrats (aka Republicans-lite) are an effective opposition party. They are the lapdog party, just looking for scraps at the table. The Republicans are getting a nice big helping of pork, and whatever bits fall off the table, the Democrats will scramble to get.
The right wing hate machine continues. http://www.anncoulter.com/ http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/today.guest.html and there are probably more. They make me sick. Expect dissenters to be in their crosshairs.
Bush supporters aren't the ones calling their opponents inbred, illiterate hicks at best or murdering fascists at worst, comparing Bush's win to Hitler's win in 1933, "threatening" to move to Canada or Europe (hah, like we'll really miss you), or advocating that the nation should be broken up because they lost a Presidential election. And (with, I'm sure, some exceptions, but nothing on the scale we see now) we didn't do any of that when Clinton won re-election in 1996, because we love our country more than we could ever hate any one President. I remember saying something a few months ago on here when Mike Lastort or someone was talking about how liberals love America too, and I responded "I know that you love America, but while I could be wrong, I get the impression that you hate George W. Bush more than you love America." A number (not all) of the liberals on here have been proving me right over the last 36 hours.
No. Right wingers are the original haters. Keep looking at what your media luminaries are saying right now, and have a quick look back. I have yet to see a meaningful "hand across the chasm" from any right wingers. Care to start?
oh so typical.. "EVERYTHING" Mike? You are already opposing things he hasn't brought up! Lets at least hear and discuss the issues ? no? I understand you are pissed off, and although you post stuff I dont agree with most of the time, they are usually articulate posts. this one is one of your all time worst.
That's not true, some right wingers do call left wingers terrible things. It's stupid both ways. Some left wingers are crazy socialists, and some right wingers are inbred morons, it happens. As a whole, people aren't, threads like these, and running to america, and all of this other bull ******** aren't helping anyone, don't help to make america more united, they're just plan hurtful, pointless, and stupid.
I want to see gridlock. That's the only way to stop the Republicans from destroying what's left of the Consitution.
Surely, you can't be shocked by this. Ann Coulter is Satan's rag doll, and Rush can't help himself. Of course he will attack any person who opposes the president that passed the largest "prescription drug" program in history. Hillbilly Heroin for all my friends!
I saw the concession speech, and thought it was very well done. A lot of Kerry "supporters" are turning on him, but I have to say, I was not a big fan when he got the nomination, but he grew on me, and I think he had the potential to be a very good president. As far as "healing wounds" I hate to tell you, but that is mostly on your boy. He's got the white house, both houses of congress and the chance to appoint close to half of the SC before it is all said and done -- not to mention a number of other fed court judges. We can say nice things, but dubya and his party don't have to work with us. Will they? That is the question. I'm not hopeful when his first press conference is loaded with, "I will work closely with those who agree with me."
I expect W will only work with sycophants, as he always has. He will not change. Republicans will get pork. Spineless Democrats will get scraps. Progressives will get squat.
Alex: Pledging to work towards making the nation better does not equate to agreeing with everything that our leaders are doing. Dissent is the cornerstone of any strong democracy. One of the reasons why Bush is so infuriating to the non-True Believers is because dissent is not tolerated by his Administration. If Bush or Republicans or you want some help in making the country better, we're here to help. Give us a call, schedule a meeting, send an e-mail. Don't just give a speech about bipartisanship and then cocoon back in the Republican caucus again -- It's not like Clinton won't return Bush's phone calls. But as the party in power your side has made a conscious effort to go it alone, to not involve a range of opinions or potential dissenters in decision-making. Bush (or really Cheney etc.) makes the decisions on what to do, and then steamrolls and demonizes those who don't agree with their sole solution. They don't give a rat's ass about consensus -- why should they, if they can reach a majority without consensus, right? Like I said, we're here to help if you ever decide you want it. The people running this Administration haven't shown any real interest over the past four years in wanting it.
If Bush supporters like Coulter and Limbaugh don't like being called Nazis, they should take off the brown shirts and armbands.
If you are serious about doing that you will only end up in the toilet with a finger in the president's ass.
True, but it has to work both ways. Is it likely that the likes of Edward Kennedy and Nancy Pelosi will welcome the president's phone calls, if he does make them? Perhaps they can begin by disavowing all the insults that they heaped upon him now that the election is over.
