And doesn't it just kill you they are West Ham boys. The bit I really like, when they say they are prepared to use their own cash! Sunday, November 21, 2004 Blues chiefs will fork out for striker Birmingham City chairman David Gold and co-owner David Sullivan are prepared to dip into their own pockets to provide funds for manager Steve Bruce to buy a new striker in the January transfer window. Bruce goes into today's game at Blackburn with only three fit strikers at his disposal in Emile Heskey, veteran Dwight Yorke and Clinton Morrison - who has only just recovered from knee surgery. Gold and Sullivan are aware of the need to strengthen in that department as Blues have netted only eight goals in the opening 13 Premiership games ahead of the trip to Ewood Park. Gold told the Birmingham Sunday Mercury: 'We are aware of the situation and we cannot carry on with just three strikers. The manager has spent his budget and we will have a look to see how that can be revised. 'If that is not possible then myself and David Sullivan will use our own money to give Steve what he needs. 'It is something we would do as part of our ongoing commitment to Birmingham City. We know, like thousands of Birmingham fans, that we need a new striker. 'We all know that we will be in serious trouble if we don't score more goals. The owners will be meeting Steve soon to listen to his suggestions. 'He and his people are working hard to come up with names for the January transfer window.'
The question is though how many more times would Gold be willing to do this? If things don't improve after he has pumped in some money out of his own pocket then he isn't likely to do it again IMHO. He may even decide to jump ship and come down to invest some money with West Ham. A long shot I know. Either way no-one puts money into a football club without expecting to get something (usually more money) out of it.
