Who do you think will win the Tiger Cup this year? Do you think we can see a challenge to the traditional semi-final line up of Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam & Malaysia? How do you think Timor-Leste (East Timor) will fare in their first tournament? I dunno, nothing's really changed soccer-wise in the Philippines, has it? Activity for the national team still hovers around zero, right? (sorry, just griping) Don't know about Myanmar, but if going by the rankings they won't make any headway against Thailand or Malaysia.
Maybe true. Actually, I can see Philippines losing all 4 games, including against Timor. But it would be nice to see a turnaround in fortunes, just for a change.
this year is gonna be great...i hope indonesia can win this tournament especially after peter withe take charge the team playing very different football...one to watch is indonesian new young striker 18 years old...his name is Boaz Sallosa...he played with indonesia u-20 asian cup in malaysia a few months ago.now he is in the senior team. i think the big surprise will come from timor leste..
my bet's on Thailand to win. But since this is the first time I will try to follow the Tiger cup, I will support Singapore. I have seen them during the ACQ2004 and the WCQ2006 and think they are quite a good team. So I will be cheering them can someone tell us a breif history about the competition? Thank you in advance
The Tiger Cup is held between ASEAN nations every two years since 1996 (as far as I can tell), and either by coincidence or (lack of) design, these nations represent the lower tier of Asian soccer. In actuality, the top four nations that mcruic named are so far above the rest of the field that, except for 1998 (Singapore, as a co-host, made the semis), the lesser nations are free points to the group leaders and eventually cannibalize each other in the end. I only follow the Philippines as an ethnic attachment, and the only television I've ever seen of the Tiger Cup is/was on Football Asia. Most of the information I get is from http://www.aseanfootball.info/
In 1998 Singapore did not co-host or just reached the semi-final. Vietnam was the host & Singapore won the Tiger Cup against Host Vietnam 1-0 in the Final Also it is not by lack of design, ASEAN as a name was meant to consist the entire 11 SEA (South East Asia) nations & it was a political grouping when first started in 1967. Today ASEAN is generally taken as the name for SEA
Tiger Cup was started in 1996 as Roehl Sybing written, the same year AFF (ASEAN Football Federation) was formed. AFF was formed to improve ASEAN football as at that time with countries like Laos, Camboida & Myanmar etc just re-joining the football scene so there was a need for centralize group to help everybody. Before the Tiger Cup the SEA Games was the unoffical ASEAN Champion but there were problems with the SEA Games arrangement as whenever it was Philippines turn to host it they were 'unwilling' to include football in the Games. Also at that time with AFC wanting to turn SEA Games into U23 competition so the birth of the Tiger Cup At first, it was meant to be called ASEAN Championship but the promise of generous sponsorship from Tiger Beer for as long as the competition is held lead AFF to reward them by calling it Tiger Cup. Thailand have won 3 out of 4 editions (1996, 2000 & 2002) with Singapore once (1998) Countries that host the Tiger Cup - Singapore (1996), Vietnam (1998), Thailand (2000) & Indonesia & Singapore (2002)
My apologies, I misread the website (only followed the '00 and '02 editions). It notes one of the venues as Singapore - must have been a qualifying round. But as for the design remark, this is what I said: Welcome to BS.

Brunei's only win came in 1996 (1-0 against Philippines, who else?) and Philippines's single match which didn't end in defeat was a 1-1 draw with Cambodia in the 1998 Qualifying Tournament in Singapore (the only tournament which has used a pre-qualifier).
Group A Vietnam squad Singapore squad Group B Thailand squad Once more squads informination are released, will add them
@ilbaasha: Thanks for supporting Singapore! I hope we won't disappoint you. ^_^;; Also good luck to Kuwait in the Gulf Cup! I have always kinda liked Kuwait (since 2002 Arab Cup). --- Check out Timor Leste's profile from the official website. Interesting!
Hey guys ... Timor Leste will definetly have a word to say in this Tiger Cup. It is a very unexperienced squad but very talented. The Head Coach - JOSE LUIS - was a great player with Portuguese powerhouse SL Benfica and also the Portugal National Team. They also have soem experienced players. One defender that plays in Portugal's 2nd Division after being in USA and Italy and 2 other that plays in Australia state leagues. The talent pool is still alive ... was left by the Portuguese colonization. Top 3 in the group phase thats my bet ...
After Round 1 Group A Vietnam 1-1 Singapore Indonesia 6-0 Laos Group B Malaysia 5-0 Timor Leste Myanmar 1-0 Philippines
I am still cheering for Singapore despite the loss of two important points... I hope we can get all points in our next match. Go on Singapore
More like their 2 ever point as Philippines was defending more than attacking but still fall short with a late goal by Myanmar
After Round 2 Group A Vietnam 1-1 Singapore Indonesia 6-0 Laos Indonesia 0-0 Singapore Vietnam 9-1 Cambodia Group B Malaysia 5-0 Timor Leste Myanmar 1-0 Philippines Malaysia 4-1 Philippines Thailand 1-1 Myanmar
Did any of you watch Malaysia-Timor Leste ? Considering the inexperienced squad ... what do u think of Numbers 16, 9 and 10 ? The Thailand game will be a tough one ... i just hope that they can have a decent result ...
Please tell me you watched it online. I would love to see other/some/any Tiger Cup matches and/or highlights.
