Wiese works wonders again. 600 minutes plus with no goals surrendered. Hoffenheim gets a penalty today, and he stops that too. It's time for us to give Wiese his due. This guy's as good as any keeper in Germany. For some time, I've noticed an anti-Wiese sentiment on the boards, and I haven't been able to understand why. Everything I've ever seen from the guy tells me he's easily one of Germany's best keepers. Here's a little evidence from the Tim Wiese show: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSh9N7QIgKk&feature=fvw"]YouTube - Tim Wiese Show[/ame] Several years ago, he put one of the best goalkeeping displays I've ever seen against Juventus in the Champions League. Juventus should have had 5 or 6 that day, but Wiese stopped almost everything. Last spring, he stops three of four penalties against Hamburg in the Pokal. Simply brilliant. The evidence: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfJ8pOcQm6g&feature=related"]YouTube - DFB Pokal Halbfinale HSV vs. Werder Elfmeter Schießen 22 04 2009[/ame] He comes from the Jens Lehmann school of goalkeeping, a highly intelligent individual, quick to challenge the shooters, great anticipation, and tremendous shot-blocking. Wiese also gets down to the ground real quick for such a big man. Simply put, Wiese is one of the best.
OMG, I'm so surprised, he saves a penatly and there's a Wiese thread. He has too many mental lapses when it counts, I have nooooo trust in him. He has many great saves but then he lets in absolutely stupid goals. (against Aktobe for example) Great keeper but not a #1 for Germany. Never. Ever.
They all have mental lapses. I'm sure we could point to mental lapses committed by Adler and Neuer, and by Lehmann and Kahn. Heck, Oliver Kahn was a walking mental lapse his last several seasons. Not a game seemed to go by without him pulling some bonehead move or committing a blunder. He committed one of the costliest mental lapses in a World Cup Final. He couldn't corale Rivaldo's shot in the 2002 final, which lead to Ronaldo's rebound goal. If he makes that save, Germany has a chance of winning the WC. Here's Kahn's mental lapse: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_AH0a_8c80&feature=related"]YouTube - Brazil 2 x 0 Germany[/ame] They all commit mental lapses.
Enke isn't either, neither is Wiese. Saying simple as doesn't really make it that simple when he still hasn't proved he's not a clown at making mistakes. Everyone has mental lapses, the problem is Wiese has them more than others. I could care less though, I'm confident Loew will not put him as Germany's #1 no matter how much Bremen fans dream or other German fans get a hard-on after he saves a penalty.
Spot on Snakeater. For some reason, probably his hair style and big mouth, only Wiese's 'mental lapses' seem to count, while the other keeper's mistakes are usually 'overlooked'. It's this unfair treatment Wiese gets that annoys me really. I have absolutely nothing against the other keepers, on the contrary, I am a big fan of Neuer and Adler in particular. I just want all of them to be judged fairly, by the same standards. Kicker magazine, who always were very critical of Wiese, voted him as the best, hence most consistent, keeper in the league last season. Even notoriously critical Kicker have acknowledged his progress, his increased maturity and confidence on the pitch. Tim Wiese 2009 is not the same keeper who cost Werder the CL 1/4 final against Juventus a few years ago. If you have the right character and mind set, big mistakes like those can make you stronger, you can learn from them and grow as a player and human being. And Wiese does have the right mentality, he has the ambition and will to improve constantly. Just like his idol Oliver Kahn, he is 'crazy' in a positive way. It's about time that he gets the respect and recognition he deserves.
Snakeater is no Bremen fan AFAIK, but I guess you had it all figured out anyway. It's not just the penalties he saves, it's his habit to win / save games for his team on a consistent basis that has slowly, but surely made more fans, including Werder fans, realise what a great keeper he really is. Wiese basically has to be twice as good as the competition to get the same level of recognition. It's Germany's loss that he doesn't seem to get a proper chance in the national team. Fortunately however, the other keepers are very good also. Like I said, Kicker voted him as the most consistent keeper in the league last season, in a season that was rather disappoiting for Werder that is. If his "mental lapses" really would happen more frequently, this could not have been possible.
He hasn't made any crazy blunders recently, and by crazy blunders I mean the ones that affect him for more than a game. Three years ago in the UEFA cup he came out for a challenge and surrendered a red card. For the rest of the season and the beginning of the following season he played with his feet planted on the line, afraid to come out like he usually does and rendering him ineffective. Two years ago in the UEFA cup he surrendered a howler against Rangers, then performed poorly on another goal after that, and again, for a stretch he wasn't doing so well. Last year and so far this year, he hasn't done that though, which is encouraging to see. I just don't think his catching ability and his outfield abilities are good enough to be the #1. I rank them Enke, Adler, Neuer and then Wiese. However for Werder I would say he is the best fit of the four.
at least we have no goalkeeper problem: Adler - very good Neuer - Excellent Wiese - superb Enke - OK Rensing - well...only if all other die in an aircraft accident ^^
Kicker also rated Enke as the best keeper I think last season. The second I let some journalist make the decisions about players for me when I'm seeing them with my own eyes, I'll quit watching football.
It's not about him becoming Germanies No.1, I can also live with the others. It is about giving him a fair judgement. Many posters here, especially from the teams where the other keepers are playing, diss him, because of mistakes, that happened 3, 4 years ago, and lure every week in front of tv for finding new mistakes. He worked a lot on his play and I am happy he is in such a good form for Werder. Kicker summer 2009 ranking Sure, journalists also bring their own preferences and opinions into judments, but at the kicker ratings a lot of people are asked, so biases are evened out a bit. Wiese didn't concede many goals in the second half of the season (the ranking is only for the 2nd half of the season) and his performance in the cup competitions were great. So, I can understand the kicker 2009 ranking.
Yea, Wiese saved a penalty.. 1) Wiese has caused it 2) the penaly was very bad shot => nothing special. In my opinion the No.1 national keeper should clear the ball without foul.
Wiese cleared the ball without foul. The referee had tomatoes on his eyes, Maico[something] dived into the keeper. Naldo fouled a Hoppenheim player in the penalty area, so it evened out. But yesterday Wiese would have saved that one, too.
No, Sportschau showed it very nice. He don't hit the ball but the player. Clear penalty. He just miss the ball and in my eyes our No.1 for Germany shouldn't miss it in this situation.
Wiese is a player, that takes the risk and that makes him strong. Sure, there are scenes where he looks bad because of it, but at that scene the Hoffenheim player dived. Anyway, the penalty was saved and the match won.
It was clearly both, a penalty and a dive. Would be great if FIFA would take a look at hockey, there the ref can punish the dive and the foul/embellishment at the same time. Also, right now Enke is clearly as good as Neuer or Adler so it's rediculous to see all these rankings. I totally understand that people prefer the young guys with the potential to become even better and maybe world-class like Adler and Neuer (hey, I'm one of them) to start for the NT but to say that right now both Neuer and Adler are better than Enke is just very funny and biased and doesn't reflect reality. Btw, intersting read for those able to understand German: Wer ist der "Elfmeterkiller" in der Bundesligageschichte? I guess Wiese would be higher in the rankings if you'd include the last months.
No, it wasn't a dive. Wiese hit him clear at the leg. Tomorrow we can easily see it with the Spieltaghighlights from bild.de. There is a very nice camerapicture. Enke is ill.
This discussion can be easily ended cause Wiese himself said that he did touch him and its ok to give the penalty.
OK, what I meant was that it was both a penalty and embellishment and in hockey both players would have been punished.
I think Enke's injuries are going to be re-occurring and if that is the case he shouldn't be taken to the WC in which case Wiese will get the third spot. That means he will be tested in a friendly and will get his chance. Then again, that might not happen but I do agree with those who feel he doesn't get the chance he deserves and I think that comes down to his personality. The DFB sees two up and coming players, both young, talented and with very clean cut and ideal images so they get preferential treatment (if a bit unfair). Adler and Neuer's idolization is a bit disturbing to be honest.
Bild.de asked: Who's the best German goalkeeper? Almost 13000 users participated in the survey. Tim Wiese (Werder Bremen) 70% René Adler (Bayer Leverkusen) 20% Manuel Neuer (Schalke 04) 5% Robert Enke (Hannover 96) 3% Jens Lehmann (VfB Stuttgart) 2% http://www.bild.de/BILD/sport/fussb...bei-deutschlands-fans-nummer-eins-im-tor.html
Good find, Hendrik. Off the link you sent, there's several articles on/interviews with Wiese. Says Wiese has stopped 10 of the last 14 penalties he's faced. That's phenomenal. I've always thought it an achievement if the keeper could get his hand to every one in five penalties, but to have a save rate of close to 70% is sensational. Article in German: http://www.bild.de/BILD/sport/fussb...2009/10/19/tim-wiese/elfer-killer-zur-wm.html Maybe someone can chime in and tell us what save percentage is expected of a top-flight keeper.
