Great win for Bill Irwin (a Clive product). Maybe this hints at the possible development of a different kind of player coming up through the ranks.
Well, not so much a a Clive product as a Clive partner. They first met in the NASL ranks. They were a great team all through Clive's tenure from when Clive first coached the men's program back in the 1980's. He's now the Director of Soccer and is the person most responsible for the Men's Program. Garrett Smith handles most of the responsibility for the women, as he has as an assistant since 1992 and head coach and Associate Director since 2003. Bill is no stranger to coaching women, though. He's been the Keeper Coach for Both the men's and Women's programs since the start, with only a short break when Clive died and he had to shoulder the Director's job and brought in a keeper coach for a while. That u23 team is an awesome team - very polished. They looked world class this spring when they were training at Portland. They'd give most full National teams trouble. You'll see some of those players on the full team soon, I'm sure. Congrats to them all.
i just believe in the talent of averbuch, dimartino and trotter from this team. i'm hoping that irwin is getting them ready for the senior team. i'm seeing averbuch in boxx's spot before long. i'm sure there are other players that i don't know anything about. congrats to them.
Bosio deserves a real hard look at. She is the creative attacker we are missing. One that can take players on and beat them 1v1 and with a deadly, strong shot. Klein is another. Here is a midfielder that led SCU's midfield for the past three years and has skill on the ball that is absolutely amazing. She is very quick, but also tiny. Her size is the reason, I assume, that she is overlooked but she sure seems to be doing well at this level. She might be small, but she plays harder and tougher than most people 5 inches taller. Also take a good look at Reynolds on the back line. Here is a defender with track speed (won the either the 200 or the 400 in her home state in high school), tall and good footskills. She played forward for SCU her freshman year. Great 1v1 defender who attacks like an old SCU defender - Danielle Slaton. There is my SCU bias. But these three are great players.
All US U23 Nordic Cup Results Since no one's reported them here, these are the results for all US Nordic Cup matches: US 1 Switzerland 0 US 3 England 0 US 2 Norway 0 US 3 Germany 0 Pretty darned good, especially the defense. Does this mean anything in relation to the mourning over the decline of US Women's Soccer?

good stuff. i'm looking forward to seeing some of these players in the wps and then in the uswnt. i'm wondering which ones will be able to survive at the next level. the jump usually weeds a few out.
they finally posted the u-23 nordic cup championship story, but it's not on the front page of ussoccer.com. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW some boys club teams get more play than a tournament that the US soccer federation deems the best competition for our U-23s.
Re: All US U23 Nordic Cup Results Well I don't think anyone have questioned the US youth systems ability to produce big, strong, very fit girls with decent technical skills. I saw the Norway game on place, US dominated it mainly due to being bigger (considerably so) and fitter. Technical skills were about even with perhaps a slight edge to Norway and talking to the locals it seemed they all thought the Norwegian girls seemed to have a better grasp of tactics.
Re: All US U23 Nordic Cup Results Jan, who were you talking to about this game? Can we see it on-line? Perhaps Norway has some technical players, but if their tactics were strong, wouldn't they have more than 2 shots on goal for the match? Statistical Summary: USA / NOR Shots: 15 / 4 Shots on Goal: 8 / 2 Saves: 2 / 6 Fouls: 9 / 12 Corner Kicks: 6 / 2 Offside: 6 / 1
Re: All US U23 Nordic Cup Results The other spectators, mostly locals I was at the game, no TV was there as far as I could tell. If you think statics tell you all about the game I have nothing to add. Otherwise please note, that the Norwegian tactics wasn’t superior to the US ones (not by much anyway) but the Norwegian girls just seemed to be more aware of why they where doing things and to be able to adapt more easily, but the great US advantage in size and to some extent fitness nullified that Norwegian advantage size US could keep to their game plan. A massive advantage in size and some in fitness will beat a marginal advantage in tactics. And Norway had another disadvantage that helped US. It looked like most of the Norwegian girls didn't think they could win after the first US goal, apart from an about 5 minutes burst directly after that goal and 10 minutes in the end, it was only one or two of the Norwegian girls that actually made more than a token effort when attacking (they did kept on fighting on the defense to keep the loss down). Nothing of this diminish the victory as such, but I would be a bit careful to draw to much conclusion from this.
