According to this it will be Bimbo. Probably nothing you guys don't know at this point but I figured I 'd post it. I found it from my Yahoo homepage, didn't even have to look hard for it. I wonder if the inky should've kept there mouths shut till after the press conference. http://www.philly.com/inquirer/loca..._team_wins_sponsorship_from_Bimbo_bakery.html
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) Well, well, well. I knew that sooner or later, something would come down from the top that would turn me off and kowtowing to the SOB wasn't enough for Union. They had to go out and get a sponsorship deal which will result in B-I-M-B-O being emblazoned across the jersey that I am now no longer proud to wear. To assume that many fans live under a rock and whom need the proper pronounciation spelled out for them on billboards isn't that bad, but to promote a business based in another country doesn't quite fit into my plans of buying American manufactured goods and services. There are necessities in life that have a great influence upon such decisions, but when sports entertainment isn't very high on the list of things I just gotta have, that choice becomes entirely mine.
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) You realize Bimbo owns a number of US brands, manufactured here in the US, in addition to having a large bakery in the Philadelphia region employing US workers right? I think the name of the company can be a very real short term problem, but the simple fact is that this company met the Union's price and has a very large local presence. If you earn a Union jersey, you already support a foreign company making it's goods in yet another foreign company.
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) Well now that it is official, I am glad I saved this photo from last year with my Bimbo brother to use for my avatar. Back in the day when I had a full head of hair I was called a bimbo a lot. Now I can walk proudly when I hear it again. Bring it on! Doop!
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) While a noble, effort how on earth did you buy any Union gear? Adidas is German and I'm guessing the jerseys are not US made (can't check...on the road for work).
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) Adidas,VW, Continental, Panasonic, Toyota are all foreign Firms, but many MLS teams have no problem taking money from them. Look at it this way, don't buy a Bimbo bread if you feel that strongly about it, and you have last years logo-less jersey to wear. I for one am pumped that they are getting $12M for this. That's a decent roll that's hard to turn down.
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) Yeah, they kinda stole the thunder on that Presser...
According to the article the Bimbo logo will be the standard red, white and blue. Thought that wasn't going to be allowed per MLS uniform policy Hey Nick Sack, I'm glad you got a new pile of money to count, but please stop this BS right now.
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) $3M/year. perhaps money does talk. edit:$3M
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) It's not like Bimbo's products are made in Mexico either. The ones we get are all made here by the same kind of people who'd be making Tasty, Hostess, or Little Debbie. I'd be shocked if Adidas, Continental, or Panasonic make a single product in the US. Toyota probably makes more product in the US than Ford.
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) good money, shite sponsor. that pretty much sums it up. get those plain jerseys while they last.
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) I read it on my blackberry...are we sure it's a $4 million per year deal?
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) Sorry yeah, $3M/year. I'm acting like a Bimbo this AM...
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) 4 years at 12 million is 3 million per year...
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) We'll see. Smacks of assumption on the writer's part.
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) WHOA when did horsham,pa move out the country?
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) I see what you did there. If the team is smart, they'll offer 2 versions of all shirts to appease to both camps - those who don't mind the "BIMBO" logo (and perhaps find it lends some credibility to the team), and those who find the logo/name/wordmark questionable. Teams do it when their sponsors are alcohol, etc, so why not this?
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) love it! a large sum of cash from a well known soccer sponsor on this side of the globe (Chivas, America etc etc). This company obviously respects and supports the game we love. Where do I buy my shirt?
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) Now that ****'s gotten real, here are my thoughts... Pros: - Money is good - Potential (and needed) outreach into the Hispanic community - "Boy named Sue" effect - team and fans/supporters get even tougher to compensate for name Cons: - Merch sales might take a hit. Hard to see soccer moms dressing their kids in shirts that say "Bimbo" (my wife has already said no way) - Could hurt further outreach into the Philly sports community. Joe Phillies Fan and Jim Eagles Fan will be even more skeptical - Potential poor implementation of logo on jersey (might find out today)
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) I've only noticed teams selling youth shirts without beer company logos. I don't think they'll sell two versions of the shirt because that will lower the value of Bimbo's sponsorship. If this come with, as it appears it will, a national awareness campaign, that along with a league-wide sponsorship should remove the brand's stigma pretty fast. I'm not sure I'd be willing to wear it yet, but I have jerseys. I suppose I can just go with those until I'm more comfortable or the sponsor changes. We all have that option.
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) I wonder if the team concluded that given the limited scope of the fanbase, a very high percentage of the people who would buy a jersey have already done so, so that reduced jersey sales won't be an issue, at least in 2011. In a few years, the Bimbo will become visual noise that nobody will pay much attention to.
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) Or we'll get a more universally popular sponsor...
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) I dunno, we're getting a third kit this year (maybe) and probably all-new kits next year. Don't think they're counting on punting jersey sales.
Re: Philadelphia Uniform Sponsorship Speculation (Catch All Thread) Tell that to Celtic. At bottom-right: http://celticsuperstore.co.uk/stores/celtic/products/kit_selector.aspx?selector=308&nav=Replica I don't know how it would lower the value. They'll also be a league sponsor.
