Other scores this afternoon: Yugoslavia 113-63 Angola No surprise here, Yugos shoot 65%. Puerto Rico 78-75 Turkey Sounds like an excellent game, close from start to finish. PR overcomes injurues (Arroyo and Fajardo) to pull it out against debutants Turkey. Former USC player Larry Ayuso scored 22 and 70 year-old Jose Ortiz had 18 points and 11 rebounds. Turkoglu had 20 for Turkey. Spain 85-54 Canada Canada completely tanks without their NBA players. Gasol had 19 points in 23 minutes for Spain.
I don't think Cuban is entirely to blame for the Nash situation. Finley and LaFrentz are in the same boat and playing, and neither of them have made the kinds of sacrifices Nash has made to play for Canada in the past. There had to have been some part of Nash's heart that didn't feel like playing this summer. Much worse IMO is Magloire, who hasn't played for Canada since 1996, and played in someone's charity game the same day the Hornets doctors called the Canadians to tell him he'd be unavailable for the Championships. MacCulloch is also injured. Fox actually wanted to play for the Bahamas earlier this summer, but wasn't allowed to--he says he won't play for Canada again.
Dustin, Actually, per Nash, he wasn't physically able to play for Canada. http://espn.go.com/nba/news/2002/0815/1418538.html Shame, they could have used him. Watched the 2nd half of the Canada-Spain game today, and the Canadians looked absolutely horrible out there.
This evening's early scores: Germany 85-76 China Not as close as it sounds, Germany was up 24 after 3 quarters. Nowitzki had 22 in the first half, 30 for the game. Yao had foul trouble but still managed 16 points and 7 boards in 18 minutes. New Zealand 90-81 Russia The first big upset. New Zealand beat Yugoslavia a couple weeks ago, but trailed by 22 in the third quarter before closing with a 55-24 run. Pero Cameron had 22, Miami's Sean Marks 21, and Wisconsin's Kirk Penney 19. Kirilenko had an awful game for Russia.
Props to Ortiz -- he's been around for a while http://www.2002worldbasketball.com/teams/americas/puertorico.htm 38. Jose Ortiz, meet Carlos Valderrama. Carlos Valderrama, meet Jose Ortiz. Why don't you two grab you each some Geritol and chat for a while in those rocking chairs out on the porch? Fellow Puerto Rican Jerome Mincy is 37 as well, and like Ortiz, he's made three trips each to the Olympics and the WBC, as well as winning gold at the 1994 Goodwill Games.
Final games from tonight: USA 110-60 Algeria Paul Pierce beat the Algerians 16-13 in the first quarter. He could have done it for the whole game, but the rest of the team got jealous. Argentina 107-72 Venezuela New Spur Emanuel Ginobili had 19 points in 24 minutes, and Andres Nocioni, who had that dunk over Garnett a few years ago, scored 16. Venezuela's super scorer Victor Diaz was held to 12.
Re: Props to Ortiz -- he's been around for a while Marca referred to Puerto Rico as an "under-32 team"
BRAZIL wins with a LAST SECOND 3 Pointer!!!!! 88 x 86 Brazil's only lead in the game! Brazil is now 2-0 Turkey 0-2 Turkey needs to beat Lebanon while Brazil plays Porto Rico for first place in the group. WOw!
Impressive comeback by Brazil, Marcelinho hitting a three in the dying seconds for the win. Other games: Puerto Rico 99-77 Lebanon Lebanon cuts a 20-point deficit to 4 but Puerto Rico pulls away in the fourth quarter. Ayuso scored 37 (20 in the first quarter alone) for PR. He also has his own webpage: http://www.graphmaster.com/ayuso/ Joe Vogel had anothetr solid game for Lebanon with 19 points and 12 rebounds...in a previous life Vogel was a center for Colorado State and the last pick in the NBA draft one year. Spain 71-69 Yugoslavia Spain almost blows an 18-point lead but survives after Bodiroga misses the tying shot. Gasol played the whole game and led the way with 25 points and 8 rebounds. Angola 84-74 Canada Pathetic by Canada...even without Nash they should be doing better than this. Biggest win for Angola since the '92 Olympics.
