I think this add does a very effective job of removing soccer's status as the sport it's OK to bash. Nike is the alpha dog of the American sports market, above ESPN, IMHO. It's like the coolest kid in school (Nike) just stood up for the new kid (soccer) who was getting teased all the time, and now the new kid (soccer) is officially cool, or at least, no longer open game for bullying. I think it may no longer be fashionable to bash soccer. Doing so would be like admiting you're not in the know.

Sorry, I just watched it again. I also don't think this add could have done a better job of conveying the current state of soccer in America...it's being played by youth all over the country (urban, rural, suburban clips of young players), the U.S. has SERIOUS up and coming talent (adu clip), and we now have homegrown stars for all these youth to look up to (images of Donovan, Beasley, Bocanegra) who are raising our Nat's to new level of international competitiveness that can compete against against the traditional soccer giants (goal against England in packed US stadium)....and the sport's announcers who are still bashing soccer just don't know what the F is going on/coming!.............it couldn't be said any better.

Its fanstastic. Havent seen it on telly as of yet. The stream is slow. Still it looks fanstastic. I'm totally geekin' that Nike filmed large chunks of the urban shots in Chicago. Plus it helps that USSOCCER House is here in Chicago. Also they used the footage of the England/US match at Soldier Field that i attended. That goal makes your hair stand up on the back of your neck. Hopefully Nike will buy space primetime sports and primetime entertainment. That would work wonders for the game. They should aired till it gets annoying. We'd all enjoy it and I'm sure Joe Pointyhead-Ball will at least notice it. Maybe not change his mind but at least do some educatin'.

After years of letting us down, Nike is stepping up to the plate. Hopefully it wont be relegated to soccer only programming like the Adidas/MLS "GarageDoor" ad is.

They are just being groomed for BigSoccer where everything is viewed through the lens of hyperbole.

Only if you choose to run it at low quality. You just ahve to change the speed you run it at.

By the way people click on the link at the Bigsoccer.com homepage and give a few pennies to the guys who keep these boards alive.

The link to the commercial on ussoccer.com works much better.

There have been reports on the various BS threads (including this one) that the commercial has been seen on Comedy Central, MTV, Fox Soccer Channel, during Leno, during Sports Center and on a local Fox Sports networks (e.g. NESN). I'd say the commercial is getting some serious airplay.

Great commercial. The only thing it's missing is a few more goals from USMN. Maybe a goal against Mexico and the goal that won us the Gold Cup?

    Re: New Nike Soccer Commercial

This is a great commercial for many reasons beyond the cool action of the players and the awesome use of Soldier Field.

First it points out the pure ignorance of many people in the media. The irony of the whole commercial is great. A small portion, sadly the people in charge of programming and covering games, tells America that they aren't interested in this game and yet we know this is the most played game in the country. This is proven by the shots of all peoples, urban/rural playing the game, in many cases utilizing non-soccer specific areas to play the beautiful game. It's great.

Good job NIKE! Go US Soccer and MLS!!!

    I love it!!!

Who is the guy slamming soccer in the beginning of the commercial?? I have a feeling thats an authentic soundbite of a soccer-hater from radio talk.

    Probably an ESPN Radio jockey!

I like the commercial. I've always thought that soccer should be marketed to the young as a rebel sport. Kind of "Your parents don't want you to play soccer." Good stuff.
