Yah know what: to find out if it's really Rome or not someone watch his next show to see if he talks about the commercial. Even if it wasn't him, I wouldn't be suprised to see him bash the thing.

wow! that is spectacular. can't wait to see it on tv.

one of the coolest thing about the commercial is that the primary thing it is selling is the sport. not a shoe. not a shirt. stuff like this takes a real commitment on the part of nike to help soccer grow and thrive in our nation. not a bad company to have on "your side". :)

That guy sounded like Jim Rome. "Real men don't play soccer. Real men get their butts kicked live on the set by Chris Everett."

It's not Jim Rome. It does kinda sound like him... no doubt intenionally so.... but that is just the voice of an actor trying to sound like your typical sports-talk knucklehead.

    About freakin' time!
Awesome, clever commercial. Yes, Nike sure knows the US sports mindset.
There's nothing like admitting the demons, to quell the demons.

I just wish they added one more line at the end to that pseudo-Rome dialogue:
"Leave it to the foreigners. We Americans should know better than to try and learn a foreign game".

And I hope they flood the markets with it.

I love the commercial but I wonder if the beginning will only fuel
the soccer haters. They may not realize the commercial mocks them.
I wonder if some kids who are not exposed to people who ridicule the game,
may now get turned off to the game. Will they get embarassed that people
talk that way about their sport? I know I was worried when my boys heard
the beginning. I think they could have left off the real men don't play Soccer
thing and left it with its a foreign game and then show all the Americans
playing. Very cool action and music in the commercial though.

The best thing, is that I can see myself in the commercial during the Dempsey goal. By using a couple of markers, I see where I was sitting. I think its so cool.

    I wish you luck, but there's a reason he's Freddy Adu. :D

I've probably seen it about a dozen times now, and it really is brilliant. It seems like they are almost saying, "We have our demographic, and for those that don't like it, piss off." Team USA looks tough coming onto the pitch, the Adu sequence is top notch and all the city scenes are shot really well.

It sure does sound like Rome. But guess what, I never really listen to him so I am going off of 20 second ad blurbs. Anyone know if that is actually Rome talking at the beginning?

Cool ad (especially the Adu part) but did they not CGI a sellout at Soldier Field? If so, it kinda kills the message they're trying to send.

Insanely enough, while I was on the myspace homepage, I noticed that the featured profile was...

    http://www.myspace.com/nikesoccer

Hopefully that will give the video some more exposure to the younger demographic.

    Re: New Nike Soccer Commercial

Yeah, I saw it tonight for the first time on FSC, and agree with everyone, it's aces. Great to hear it's getting more 'mainstream' airplay. But these guys aren't fools. They looked at not just the ratings for the last World Cup but the demographic, and this market is finally mature enough to pump big bucks into it. I'm even seeing signs of that ESPN. (Yes, I know, next thing the Pope will be ordaining lesbian priests, but really, witness the redesigned soccernet page and the two, rather than one or even none, sometimes, CL matches a week.) As sad as it may be, because most all of us love the game because of the game, it takes corporate America to put something at the top of its agenda, market it, sell it, make it *cool*. And we're finally begining to see it happen.

Not to mention the telecommunications revolution, which has made it far, far, far easier to follow the sport than it was even five years ago.

The over 50 sports-editor types won't know what the hell has hit them next summer, but there's a carefully orchestrated campaign that's being managed that, IMHO, is just going explode out seemingly nowhere to a lot of folks next summer. Enjoy.

Oh, hello everyone. First post. :)

Does anybody know why they have shown footage of the US England game it's a crap goal in a friendly game that the US lost surely footage of a US goal in 2002 would be more appropriate it doesn't make any sense.

I imagine it's because the USSF doesn't own the rights to use the World Cup highlights and it looks like most of the commercial was filmed in Chicago probably around the time of the England match
