Chiesa is really the only guy who has pace and isn’t afraid to dribble past his man. At the end of the day, simply what we are missing is pacey, speedy dribblers with an ability to get past their man. Thats it! That’s all.
I think with Scamacca Cheisa Pellegrini Fratessi you can do it even Fagioli can play in the attacking midfield spot but he should be used in place of Jorginho. Spaletti used both the 4321 and the 3421 in friendlies and always the 3421 made us look more of a threat offensively because of our fullbacks. he got cocky against Albania and said we will play both a 4231 and a 3421 and then thought oh wow look at me I am so smart I will do the same against Spain but Spain turned his formation into a 424 and completely cracked it within minutes. The 4231 just does not work for us and we've seen this for months. yes we lack wingers but with a 3421 the two behind the striker can be inside forwards and the fullbacks are your wingers. We are blessed with fullbacks even with Udogie hurt. That is how we play to our strength. Spaletti just hates to sacrifice a midfielder fro a centre back but you have no choice because you can't ask Di Marco Di Lorenzo to play right back left back and Chiesa to play right wing fullback in transition. It's exhausting. Even Spain would never try such a thing only Pep with his Man City squad can do what Spalletti tried to do. It was absurd.
While I agree that we need to play 3-5-2 or 3-4-2-1. I also think that it is better to get your losses in early. Italy has always struggled in group stages, the last Euros was an exception. But if we get through, then we can go all the way. It's the teams that scrape by in group stages and grow in as the tournament progresses that usually win. Don't count Italy off just yet. We do best when all odds are against us!
I agree with this! However, I just hope we actually do improve and more importantly so, Spalletti changes the tactics because he got his tactics completely wrong in the Spain game.
From what I have gathered. I don't think he will change the tactics sadly. He seems convinced that the issue is physical fitness and fatigue, including mental sharpness. Now, while I disagree with his tactics, I do believe there is some truth to what he is saying. As he admittedly said he should have given the players more rest, which makes me suspect that perhaps he has been overtraining the players to make up for the lack of time he had with this team. What further supports this, is that when the subs came on and Retegui started pressing for example against Spain, was the only time we saw Italy getting into the game. Obviously some of it is due to Spain stepping back to defend their lead, but not all of it, the press and physicality of the subs certainly helped.
Retegui did seem to impact Spain's passing at the back. He was rushing them a little more than Scamacca was, and they got a couple turnovers from his individual pressing efforts.
Yeah ok and the team looked pretty bad against Spain. Everyone is making too much out of that Albania win. They have some players playing in the Serie A but Italy should always beat a team like Albania.
I didn't say anything about the Albania win, did I? You said there was no one in the midfield or the defense who could score, and yet there are two right there who did. Dimarco can contribute offensively, in fact he's better at that. Maybe everyone is making too much about the Spanish game? Spalletti gambled on a tactic and failed. Time to regroup.
But my point is , those two are top rated players and they are expected to do well against a team like Albania. Coming up flat against Spain three days later was awful. I want to see top rated players shine against big teams and this will prove how good they are or will be.
I'm not sure a tactical overhaul is what's needed. The Albania match shouldn't have been close. We just didn't take our chances. That's on the players. The Spain match was a different story. We were outclassed and outcoached. Spalletti didn't know what to do to affect the game. That being said, the common thread is that many of our players have underperformed over two legs. DiLorenzo? The less said, the better. DiMarco, who is supposed to be a world class fullback, has done nothing. Jorginho was invisible in that second match. Scamacca has disappointed. They can't get Chiesa involved (which I do think is on Spalletti). I think Pellegrini has been poor--and the guys that have come off the bench have not shown any quality whatsoever. If the players don't step up, we can't expect to go anywhere.
The problem in Italy is that the youth sectors are still stuck in the past and only teach tactics. They rarely teach techniques. So when the tactics fail and players need to dribble past defenders, or the pace of the game is too fast, they fail in those situations because they lack the techniques and necessary skills to succeed. Which is why we produce excellent coaches, our style is heavily based on tactics. If the coach gets it wrong, the result is what we saw against Spain.
his form first half of the season was superb then he dropped off but he would be great in a 3421 as an attacking midfield option. he has a finishing touch that a Zaniolo lacks.
I know there was absolutely no way go justify including him but this current team is missing somebody like Edoardo Bovè. High work rate, will be snapping at your heals. All just a little too comfortable out there. No physicality at all. Add to that guys that Jorginho who turns the ball over, is slow as molasses, Cristante who struggled to control a basic pass -- arggh, what am I watching here? Hope DDR finds space for him for his development.
