The Deaf team is playing at exactly the same time as Mexico vs Canada, I want to watch both matches as well as the USA match a bit later. Thank God for DVRs. But I have to avoid spoilers so I have decided that it is nearly impossible for the announcers in USA vs S. Korea to not mention the Mexico result and it is possible they will not mention the Deaf tea's result so I am kind of forced into watching Mexico vs Canada followed by USA vs S. Korea followed by USA(Deaf) vs Australia(Deaf). I hope my guess on the priorities of announcers is correct and that the announcers of USA vs S. Korea do not have to fill much dead time or they may choose to discuss the Deaf team as filler. I will enjoy the matches even if the result is leaked during the USA match but matches are much more fun to watch if you go in not knowing the result. This will be a FUN day as long as no team tanks and there are no serious injuries to anyone.
I made a mistake and my attempt at DVRing the match failed. I am VERY disappointed but the good news is that the match was on Fox Soccer Plus so it will probably be repeated several times over the next few days. FSP does that a LOT and not always with the matches you expect. That is I remember Bellies vs some even weaker team being repeated 6-8 times over the week following the match. In the future I need to remind myself to check that recordings are happening as scheduled.
I'm disappointed and a little surprised it's not on peacock for replay. I thought I saw it as a max item on youtube earlier, but I can't find it now.
It was a comfortable 11-0 win for the US. They seemed to thrive on the home-soil advantage. Very impressive. Spreeman had 6 goals, which I believe betters the Senior team's multiple records of 5 goals in a single game. .
I noted that Erin Cembrale, daughter of new BigSoccer member @Lynne Cembrale ,came off at about 37 minutes in the first half. I hope she was not hurt - I couldn't tell from the broadcast. The team clearly outclassed Australia in their set-up, plan of play, and athleticism. They looked good to the eye. I was surprised Emily Cressy Spreeman was kept on for the whole game, perhaps it was planned that with only 5 substitutes to use, one of them would not be her. I wish, given the groundbreaking nature of the occasion and that it is the "best team no one has ever heard of," that they had done a player by player introduction for the broadcast (not from the field, but a pre-prepared segment for the TV audience) - THAT would have been more useful and fun than the USSoccer guy from the extended national teams. As I have said before this team is an amazing, eclectic, group of women.
I am now almost glad I failed to set my DVR correctly. I, almost always, do not really enjoy lopsided matches even when the team i support wins. I missed a unique experience for me but I also missed a slaughter. It would not have made me love the deaf game to have such a one sided victory. When I first discovered soccer in the '70s in Japan and Germany I saw many matches and they were mostly very entertaining but there were a couple of blowouts that almost turned me against soccer but I overcame that original bias and now love soccer. Matches where it becomes clear that one team is vastly better than the other are not enjoyable matches for me to watch. I will continue to watch for the deaf team's matches and i hope the first one I actually get to see is competitive. This in no way should be taken as a slight to deaf soccer it is just that I do not enjoy blowouts. I hope they find better, more competitive, matches for the future.
But the deaf women's team is vastly better than any team they face. They have never lost a game with a 38-0-1 all-time record and 3 World Championships and 4 Deaflympics (almost all matches are in the tournaments they play; they haven't really played friendlies). I think you have to expect some lopsided results when they're on the field; their margin of goals for/against in last year's championship was something like 36-2 across 6 games.
Unfortunately Erin did take a hit to her left eye and was taken out. She did have a nice shiner for a few days but she is all well and ready for their next camp in Albuquerque New Mexico the end of July
