Texas native Lauren Omholt is a rising talent in Mexican football. After playing for them in the 2022 U-17 World Cup, she’s now a key member of the U-20 squad, recently scoring against Spain. Omholt is eligible to play for México because her father was born in Mexico City to American parents “My daughter is a very proud Mexican with dual nationality,” he said on Twitter. “We’ve always had so much love for the people of México.” Omholt was born and raised in McKinney, Texas and now plays for Purdue University. Surprisingly, the 19-year-old has been playing as a defender for México, while playing as a forward for Purdue. But she’s excelled in both positions. She’s also enjoying playing the sport in both Indiana and México, experiencing different styles of play, culture, and teammates. Omholt also gained a strong social media presence since her decision to play for México. “I felt such pride to have everyone in México supporting me,” she told the Purdue Exponent about her experience playing in the U-17 World Cup. “Wearing that crest on my jersey was special.” “I had a lot of [Mexican] supporters that would follow me and comment on my things.” “When we were in California and played USC, a couple of people drove over to the game and I got to sign autographs for them.” México is improving rapidly in the women’s game, and Omholt has become a part of this exciting program going forward.
